点评:This pertains to the "Shadow a Falconer" experience at Coda Falconry. I went in possessing a fairly minor level of knowledge about birds of prey and the techniques behind their care, as well as a want to learn more about the practical side of affairs. My expectations were exceeded. If you've even a cursory interest in falconry, I can't recommend it highly enough.
You can expect ample involvement in all kinds of hands-on activities, whether that's assisting with enclosure maintenance, preparing food for the birds, swinging a lure, or going on a woodland walk. I particularly enjoyed having the chance to learn to tie the falconer's knot; I'd be the first to tell you that I cannot tie a knot to save my life. Despite my apprehension, I got into the swing of things and managed to utilise this in weighing Frost, a tawny owl and a real gent; there's something to be said about the feeling of reward you get from attaining competence in new skills. The team's guidance and patience warrants considerable praise: Emma took charge on the experience and the rest of the team on the day (Sarah-Jane, Madeleine, and Tom) lent a hand where available. I got the impression that everyone involved at the centre possesses a wealth of knowledge and an eagerness to share it. Put simply, they're all a brilliant and friendly bunch here.
I got the impression that the birds all receive as much care and nurturing as you could expect, too. Hygiene requirements and the boundaries of each bird are well-communicated and paramount in all things, thankfully. Furthermore, each animal is treated as their own member of the team with their personalities being given the room necessary to flourish. In addition to the aforementioned Frost I particularly enjoyed working with Thunder the falcon and Uri the Steppe eagle, the former being a natural showman and the latter a more sensitive bloke than you'd expect (in a good way, of course). You may have also heard about Loki, the raven housed here! Please don't tell him I said this, as I'd hate for the fame to get to his head, but he was also wonderful to meet on the day and I'd take any chance I can get to visit him again. :P
The facilities at Hobbledown Heath were accessible and well-located, too. At risk of repeating myself: if you have even an inkling of interest in visiting or booking this experience, do so.
Hobbledown Heath
