Splendid Fort near Bhopal .. must visit along with Sanchi

点评：A wonderful fort for a day's sightseeing tour from Bhopal. An hour's drive brings you to the base of the fort, from where it's about a 2 hour walk through the ramparts. When you leave the NH coming from Bhopal towards Raisen, watch for an unmarked concrete road to the left. Take the left turn at the T point, which says 4 wheelers to the left, pedestrians to the right. The left path takes you to the Haathi gate, the right to the Chopra gate. Not much parking space at the base of the outer gate. The walk up the two gates of the fort is steep. Take sufficient water and a hat / cap as the walk can be tiring, considering the season. Do not attempt in peak summer. The main areas of the fort are about a km away from the Haathi gate, which was used by chariots and horses' entry. There is a guest house enroute, which used to house visitors to the fort. There is a Kings palace (was closed for renovation), a Queen's palace, a bath pond, Dhobi Mahal and an Itrdaan (building with acoustic characteristics, walls that transmit whispers to the other side of the building). Cannons are seen atop the fort, one even having an iron ball stuck in it's muzzle. The view from the cannon pedestal of the Raisen town below and beyond is fabulous. There is a clay and fruit paste making stone with a circular ring where bullocks were used to grind the paste, used as mortar to stick the stone pieces together. Although the fort is under the upkeep of ASI, more effort and funds seem necessary to make this natural fortification of a cliff an amazing tourist spot.
