Beautiful at Night when the Buildings are All Illuminated

点评：Grand Place is one of two ancient market squares in Arras. This is the larger of the two and is very lovely. It has a long history going back over 1000 years. Originally a grain market, later it became the playground of the 12th century Dukes of Burgundy who held their jousts and tournaments here.
What makes the square so lovely is that it’s enclosed by 17th and 18th-century Flemish Baroque houses with distinctively curved, scrolled gables. Their sandstone columns form a continuous arcade.
At first glance they all looked the same. Their uniformity was what made them so striking. However, as we looked more carefully, we could see that they each had different sculpted details. We spotted mermaids on one house and bells, helmets, or sheafs of wheat on others.
Most of the 155 houses were badly damaged during WWI and had to be carefully reconstructed.
The square is particularly pretty at night when the houses are illuminated. We came to the square one night for dinner and afterwards we enjoyed strolling through the square, taking it all in.
