点评:My wife, daughter, and I drove from San Jose de Ocoa to The Pyramid in July 2023 and then down to Constanza and finally to Puerta Plata (all day trip). Was that a crazy idea? Yes, definitely. Would I do it again? No. Were there beautiful views of the mountains, quaint local villages and life, and bragging rights for not getting stuck in the highest point in the Caribbean? Yes. And the Pyramid? Yeah, that was cool since it was a good reason to stop and assess how insane the drive to it had been. We took some good photos around it...but didn't stay long.
I've driven a lot of roads around the world, but I really should have skipped road 41 from San Jose de Ocoa to The Pyramid. Going from he Pyramid to Constanza...ok, that was not too bad, and probably not a big deal going to it from Constanza. But the way we went to the Pyramid from San Jose de Ocoa was just too stressful. There were several times I did not think we would get through parts of this insanely deep rutted road, and we had a SUV. But we didn't have a 4x4. We mainly needed the high clearance. The ruts were so deep in places I had to get out and plan how I would drive to be sure I didn't bottom out, even with the high clearance. I would speed through spots, slide a bit, and turn just right to be sure my wheels were on high ground and straddling the ruts. That's how deep the ruts were. Hair raising because no one else was out there if we did get stuck.
Someone said on another post many years ago that this road is more like a goat path. Yep, they weren't kidding. I should have listened. Maybe a motorcycle would be fun, but I don't recommend driving this road. I didn't even see locals driving in cars where we ended up, just motorcycles. Somehow we made it to Puerta Plata by sunset and had an amazing swim, but my wife was probably thinking about divorcing me. My 15 year old daughter had a blast though! Ha! Oh yeah...did I say we got a flat tire after the Pyramid and barely made it to Constanza before it was too flat!? Like I said...it was an adventure! But we were lucky!
