Good Vanilla Skiing
Skiing in Obertauern的点评
点评：Our party consisted of two advanced adults skiers, and a teen intermediate skier. At the start of each day the multiple uplift options from the base means that lift queues are pretty reasonable, and the well developed network of runs & lifts helps to spread people around the ski area. Although we visited during a school holiday period – the ski area never felt over-crowded.
It wasn’t a great snow year, but the snow conditions were good all the way to the base and the runs were well prepared. The runs are relatively short, but there’s a good mix of blues, reds and blacks and we never found ourselves without a good option. My son and myself really enjoy playing around in off-piste areas between runs – and this is where Obertauern comes up short. Whilst you can see areas of off-piste terrain from the lifts – most of it is not accessible without local knowledge. You can comfortably do a circuit of the ski area in a day, so to provide a change of scene we took the ski bus to the Grosseck – Speiereck ski area for a day (which is included in the ski pass). Although this is a small ski area it made for a really nice day.
We stayed in a family guesthouse outside of Obertauern (it’s a lot cheaper for a little less convenience) which meant a short ride on the free ski bus each day. These run every half-hour (surprisingly they stop quite early around 6pm) and at peak times they are dangerously over-crowded. They were often too hot for wearing ski gear, with heavy breaking drivers (with one hand on a mobile phone). On one journey a boy who was standing in the crowded isle passed out – simply unacceptably dangerous.
Overall, Obertauern offers really good vanilla (plain), family friendly, skiing. If that’s a flavour of skiing that works for you – this resort would be a good choice.
