Roman Circus Visitor Centre的点评
点评：The Roman Circus Visitor Centre is more than just that. Located just outside the city centre it offers the best historical experience Colchester has to offer, boasting the only known Roman chariot-racing arena in Great Britain. The site is maintained by the Colchester Archaeological Trust, and on arrival, we we warmly welcomed by Sean who introduced us to the site and the option of a self guided tour or a guided tour by an archaeologist who took part in the original dig. We choose the later and our guide, Neil, brought the history of Roman chariot-racing to life. Forget Charlton Heston and the film 'Ben Hur," chariot racing was a lot more gruesome and exciting. Neil introduced us to chariot racing arena's around the Roman Empire and more importantly Roman life in Colchester. There is an mazing model of Roman Colchester in the year 200 CE and a scale model of Colchesters spectacular Roman Circus which was literally beneath our feet. Neil introduced us to a full size replica of a Roman racing-chariot and charioteer explaining how the chariot would navigate around the area. We were able to walk round the outside of the Visitor Centre with further displays of the arena and the reconstructed stumps of the starting-gates and central gateway, and the walkway over the exposed foundations. It is an inadmissible experience and a must to pay an additional £3 for a guided tour by an archaeologist who could actually tell us first hand how an Archaeological dig takes place. Much better than Time Team.
