点评:I’ve been coming to Astley book farm for years and years, firstly when my children were toddlers where they’d choose a book followed by a tasty cake at the beautiful little cafe part of this wonderful place. Now they’re university grads, we went along recently with our list of authors to seek out and our top three wedges of lovely home made cakes we were hoping would be on display. Sadly, we were stopped in our tracks when we were told by the person on the desk that the cafe area was no longer there. He then pointed out a cabinet that held a few pre-cut cakes and informed us that there was a machine dispensing drinks where the cafe used to be, next to a scattering of sofas. I really didn’t know what to say as I was quite gutted so a bit dazed, I ordered two of the (small) pre-cut cakes and two paper cup coffees; just under £18 for the pleasure. We’d actually made a 45 minute ‘pilgrimage’ specifically for the old cafe as it was amazing - a real treasure of a place, atmospheric and a great place to flick through your purchases. I know change has to happen but it truly feels like the soul has been ripped out of the place. I don’t know whether it’s new owners or a change in management but I do wish them all the very best with the business as it is a real treasure trove for book lovers but will they get for footfall from book lovers alone for it to succeed, time will tell. I hope so.
