Great birding at Sonny Bono NWR and in the nearby fields

点评：Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge lived up to its reputation as a birding hotspot even though we had missed the large flocks of migrating waterfowl including the snow geese and Canada geese which had already departed. The birding began upon arrival while checking out the Visitors Center where we saw several Gambel’s quail running around. Along the path taking us to Rock Hill we saw Abert’s Towhee and Verdin. A Northern Harrier took a low pass over us. There were still many waterfowl in the ponds but those were off-limits to visitors and we had to make do with binoculars and zoom lenses. Given the distance heat shimmer degraded the quality of clarity of our view and the sharpness of the pictures taken.
The easiest to identify were the largest, of course, including Great Blue herons (one of which flew quite close to use) and the many American White Pelicans of which there were several feeding in the ponds. There were countless Northern Shovelers scattered throughout the different ponds. Pied-billed grebes, double-crested cormorants, American avocet and green-winged teal also shared the water. Black Phoebe, red-winged blackbirds, and Northern Rough-winged swallow were some of the non-waterfowl birds we spotted.
There were great views of Salton Sea from the top of Rock Hill.
Be sure to explore some the nearby fields. We couldn’t miss a large flock of cattle egrets in a field but quite close to road. Mixed in with them were white-faced ibis. They were a spectacular sight when they flew off. The star bird of the area was the Burrowing owl. We initially had a hard time spotting them. Once we knew what we looking for - small, upright blobs darker than the orange earth - along the embankments. They were tiny but pack fierce glares.
