Advice: don't pay up front until you see the wind and water conditions

点评：A friend and I hired Aquarius Fishing for a flyfishing trip to the lagoons on the north of Cozumel in October 2023. Obviously you're not guaranteed to catch fish on any trip and no one has control over the weather. However, we assumed the folks at Aquarius Fishing were experts for that fishery and would advise us if conditions were so bad we shouldn't go out. It is our opinion they should have called off our trip due to recent heavy rain (news to us - before our arrival) and high wind on the day of the trip and they did not; we were assured there would be protected places to fish despite the wind.
The ride out had such big swells it was really uncomfortable and jarring and scary to us as we slammed down over the waves. Some of the larger waves completely soaked us - we looked back to see that the guides had put rain gear on but hadn't advised us to.
After making it around the point we pulled into a mangrove lagoon that was more protected and calm. We waded with one guide for a couple of hours without seeing any fish. We moved to another location and the guides poled us around in the boat for two more hours. According to our guides, no fish were spotted there either due to the recent heavy rains. After lunch we moved again and they poled us around a shallow flat filled with small mangroves which would have made it difficult or impossible to land fish. We saw a few bonefish in there and each got one or two casts - our only casts of the day.
Our guides were friendly, experienced, and worked hard to find fish for us but there were no alternative areas to go because of the wind and rough seas outside the lagoon. We paid for an 8 hour day but stopped fishing at 1:00pm; they struggled to pole the boat back upwind through the small mangroves and then motored slowly through the open lagoon to the ocean and returned us to the marina at 2:30. We expressed to Carlos that we were unhappy with our day of fishing and he eventually agreed to return $50 of the $500 we had paid, not counting tips.
I recommend against paying up front for fishing with this organization until you see the wind report a day or 2 before you go. Don't count on them to make that call for you.
