If you’re a whisky lover, or even just whisky-curious, a Speyside Whisky Tour is an experience you won’t want to miss. Nestled in the heart of Scotland’s whisky country, Speyside is home to some of the most iconic distilleries, and this tour gives you the chance to get a “taste” of the best of them in Dufftown.
The tour we went on was well-organized, with a knowledgeable guide who was clearly passionate about whisky and Speyside’s history. Michelle took us on a scenic walk through the region’s stunning landscape, passing rolling hills, ponies and coos, and crystal-clear rivers that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world or time period.
We visited several distilleries exteriors, including Glenfiddich and Mortlach. Each stop offered a unique insight into the whisky-making process, from the malting of the barley to fermentation, distillation, and aging. It was fascinating to see how each distillery had its own techniques and traditions while still following the time-honored methods of Scotch whisky production. Mixed in were local stories of figures and traditions historic to the area.
The highlight, of course, was the tasting sessions. At each stop, we were treated to an interesting whisky, sometimes paired with treats such as homemade shortbread or chocolate—whisky profiles ranged from light and floral to rich and sherried.
Comfortable walking shoes and being prepared for the weather is a must, and bathrooms are not available during the walking tour. Be sure to have a designated driver and a reservation to a restaurant following the tour.
