点评:When I was a teen back in the 90's I travelled widely around NZ on trains, because they were much cheaper than flying. Now, ours trains are hugely more expensive than flying and are marketed as some sort of luxurious travel experience, so I thought I'd treat myself and the kids. The fares are steep, with the base "Scenic" fare currently being $239 one way on the Coastal Pacific. "Scenic Plus", the upgraded dining experience is eye wateringly expensive at $549 or 2.3 times the cost of the already pricey base fare. Given the "Scenic" fares were already a significant markup on flying, we opted to skip "Scenic Plus"'s daylight robbery pricing.
Sadly the trains are still slow, noisy, smelly and apart from the price increasing many fold, not much has changed. Kiwirail's much maligned ferries offer a far better experience at a much more reasonable price than their trains. There is no wifi on the trains, no 230v sockets, and the usb ports they do provide are rather inconveniently placed at floor height under the tables. The cafe food was okay but was all just reheated from a package offerings and their limited range was in short supply with some items being sold out early in the journey.
Given you can see the majority of the same views when travelling by road, I just don't think the experience is worth anything near the ticket price sadly.
