点评:There are several reviews of the Gelmerbahn, but few about walking down from Gelmersee. It took me ages to find any usable description of this variation, so I hope this one helps other like me out there.
Why would you do that? Well, for two reasons: 1) You did not get a return tickets with the Gelmerbahn or 2) You actually like to walk down.
Say you buy an ascent ticket at 14pm, but all the return tickets are gone (and they do go). Then its good to know you can walk it down.
I can highly recommend this walk, though it is very poorly described on the website and around the internet. It is a doable 2 hour walk (it says 1h 20min, but you would have to walk fast). It goes from the far end of the Dam to Handegg / Handeck, which where the carpark and Gelmerbahn is located. There is only one track. Easy to find, easy to follow.
Yes, you need ok shoes and steady footing (it's a so-called T3 track), but I am in my 50's and did it in sandals. So its mostly about footing. It is a very rocky path, but not difficult. See for yourself on the pictures. I did not feel unsure at any time.
It takes you through amazing nature, Its very quiet because very few do it. The track is well kept and offer waterfalls, stone formations and all sorts of rocky nature.
So save half the bahn ticket and walk down instead.
And yes, you can walk it up too, but that a whole different game :-)
