Sammy Maupiti Tours Private Tours的点评
点评：There is definitely a portion of the experience that got spoiled by a really bad weather... no questions there but then things could have been handled a bit better in general as well;
There was a group of about 10 people - 8 adults and I want to say 2-3 kids, we were all picked up from the pensions/lodges and dropped off to the marina where the boat was waiting for us - already at that time the weather looked pretty bad.
From there we started the boat ride looking for manta rays.. I think I saw one passing us by but that was about it, looked like other boat tours were similarly unsuccessful that day and simply moved to another area of the lagoon pursuing them - yet again no success, I don't downgrade because of this as it's similar to weather a nature aspect you can't control.
From there we then went to the coral garden - at that time weather got really bad, windy to the point that I was cold soaked in the rain on the boat, so were other people whom stayed on the boat as my wife later told me, but I did jump into the weather to see what's out there - it wasn't the most relaxing experience because the water got pretty murky and there weren't really that many great fish to look at (especially as to compared to Coral Garden in Taha'a or Bora Bora) but I did appreciate the corals here and there as there were definitely some unique ones and the underworld, with a depth of about 2 meters or more, was something I would love to see in a good sunny weather for certain, though today we were out of luck.
After this experience the tour operator decided to call off the rest of the day - this was the "full day" version with the BBQ lunch coming up - which I thought was a good idea as perhaps we shouldn't have left the marina in the first place and the tour in itself was a bad idea, especially since the weather forecast was already stating in advance about the bad weather - as it turned out it was the absolutely worst weather in our 17 days in French Polynesia, a complete all day long rain and dark clouds, which kind of gives you an idea what type of weather forecast that was in the first place.
Now, this is the part that left me and probably others caught off guard a bit - the website states 70 EURO (or what I was told 8,000 XPF per person) for the full BBQ day - whereas the half day tour with mantas and coral garden 45 EURO (so to use the same rate call it 51,50 XPF) - every person on the boat was asked to pay 5,000 XPF - I understand that they still incurred the cost of the boat and transportation but between 10+ people on that boat it could have been probably 4.000 or 3,000 per person as the experience was pretty bad and easily avoidable that day...
Again I don't downgrade it because of the weather, nor the fact nobody spoke English (Sammy wasn't there, his captain was who used very few English words, no other stuff was ever translated and there was a lot, and again as much as I disliked it I don't count it against them here as it is a French speaking island after all and I dont speak French, also the captain was nice and helped me out in the water as I didn't have fins) - but the fact that this tour should have never really happened - 10,000 goes realllllllly far for food and other stuff on an island like Maupiti and all of us ended up returning within about 3h of being on the water, maybe not even if you count the pick up/drop off - looking for a place to eat/do groceries, which on Maupiti isn't an easy things, especially without transporation.
They don't provide snorkeling equipment but were nice enough to let me use theirs for free - bring your own towel. No food or water was provided during this experience, which was another bummer as this was quite a long time without anything to drink, considering when we left our lodge.
