Castle ruins and location make it worth a visit

点评：There is plenty of parking and public toilets available in Kennedy Park and both were free of charge at the time of our visit in September 2024. (There is apparently a small fee for parking at certain times of the year). Parking in Dunure village by the harbour, a short walk from the castle, is very limited and preferred for local use only. The park overlooks the coast and there were facilities for having a BBQ or picnic and a small rock labyrinth installation could be seen on the beach below.
There is evidence to suggest that there was a fortification here back in the 13th century however there were many modifications and the current castle remains date to the 14th and 15th centuries. The fort was a stronghold of the Kennedy family at its height however fell into disuse in the 18th century and the stone ruins were subsequently plundered for alternative use. There are a few grim stories of murder and torture relating to the site as you would expect of a Scottish castle! Nowadays it is a scenic attraction which stands out on the coastline however it is only with the installation of some metal work that visitors can access some parts of the interior.
Thankfully there is no admission charge as there is not a huge amount to see and, if like me, you enjoy a sprial staircase or two and some nooks and crannies you may be disappointed. At least there are some ruins left and the setting of the nearby beach, harbour and village all of which are accessible on foot make it quite an attractive spot to visit. The village was the setting of some filming for the Outlander series.
We quite enjoyed our visit which saw the best of Scottish weather from sunshine to torrential rain in the space of a few hours.
