Historic Ruins in a Beautiful Setting

点评：We visited Odiham Castle (also known as King John’s Castle) and were really impressed by this hidden gem. Although it is now a ruin, you can clearly see the remains of the medieval walls and imagine what it must have been like when it was first built in the early 13th century. The information boards around the site are excellent, giving you a good sense of the history – from King John using it as a royal residence, to its role during the Barons’ Wars.
What makes it extra special is the setting. The castle sits right by the Basingstoke Canal, so the walk to it is really pleasant – peaceful, scenic, and great for spotting wildlife along the way. It’s an easy, flat path, so suitable for families, dogs, or just a gentle stroll.
There’s no entry fee, and while there are no facilities on site (no café or toilets), the village of Odiham itself is close by and has plenty of pubs and tearooms to make a day of it.
Overall, Odiham Castle is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. It won’t take hours to explore, but the combination of history, fresh air, and the lovely canal walk makes it a really enjoyable stop.
