点评:Artfully landscaped with ornamental flowers & trees, sky-reflecting ponds graced with pink water lilies, scenic bridges & benches, and traditional cultural expressions such as the Shishi-odoshi boar-scarer & the Yatsuhashi zigzag bridge, these Japanese Memorial Gardens are a touching tribute to lives once lived on Mayne Island, and a time to reflect on the Japanese Canadians who were unjustly forced to leave their homes in 1942.
As you approach the Gardens, & walk beneath the main Torii archway, you enter sacred ground. You can feel their spirit and sorrow the moment you step onto the soft forest trail. This short path then leads to a decorative fenced area where you proceed through a gate and into the elegant Gardens.
Walk slowly to absorb the harmony & healing that these Gardens offer. They are not on a grand scale like the renowned Butchart Gardens, but they excel in splendor. You can easily spend an hour or more here, admiring the unique elements, & examining some surprising sights (like the rock weights bending pine boughs). And what remarkable beauty! Truly a “heavenly place on earth.”
Amazingly the Gardens are now tended totally by volunteers (duly recognized on plaques). The Gardens are open year-round, and there is no admission fee. Parking is free in the small lot adjacent to the spacious Dinner Bay Park (which has picnicking facilities, lawn games, & a children’s playground).
Walking from the Mayne Island ferry terminal to the Gardens & Park is also an option – if you can hike the few slightly steep, winding roads that lead there (about a 20-minute walk). Maps available on the ferry show other walkable excursions on the Island too.
These beautiful Japanese Gardens on Mayne Island are truly a “must see.” On your way out – be sure to pull the gong on the temple bell, & welcome its resonant healing sound of peace.
