点评:Wednesday 19th March and we walked from Exe Bridge along the towpath in the direction of the historic Quays.
Walking along the pathway we passed the Cricklepit footbridge which spans the River Exe, which we walked across later on across to Haven Banks.
We followed the pathway around which led us to the impressive Customs House with the two old canons standing proudly outside it's door.
From there we ventured down the Quay with it's restored tall old warehouses. On the wall of one of them, the former Maritime Museum, there is a plaque to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee in 1977. The inscription reads:- "Since Roman times Exeter traded from this Quay, first by river, then from 1566 through the Exeter Canal, the earliest in the Country. These warehouses date from 1835".
As we continued along the quayside we passed a number of archways at the base of the sandstone cliffs, that form and shape the Quays and provide an impressive backdrop to the riverside. In the past the archways were used for dry storage within the busy working Quay. Today they are home to an array of arts and craft business, including woodwork, metalwork, glass and other assorted crafts.
As we wandered in and out of the various workshops we saw some rather unusual and creative pieces.
Another interesting feature were the old fashioned lights along the waterfront.
There were a number of restaurants and bars here, ensuring that visitor are not hungry or thirsty. Some had tables and seating outside along the quayside.
As we visited here outside the summer season not all establishments were not yet open. The iconic Butts Ferry, across the River, was not operational. We did cross the River by means of the Cricklepit footbridge.
Overall a great place to walk around and enjoy this historic Quay and its contents.
