点评：I've been residing in Dublin for more than a decade now and the charm of Ireland's historical sites never seems to fade. Recently, my curiosity led me to the Altar Wedge Tomb located in Toormore. This small, offbeat attraction may not initially strike you as being as grandiose as the more famous Irish relics, but it does carry a special aura, one which whispers tales from an ancient era.
The wedge tomb, nestled on a slope overlooking the scenic Toormore Bay, is the definition of a hidden gem. Its rugged charm and sheer antiquity – dating back to the Bronze Age, if you can believe it – render it a site of immense archaeological significance. But more than that, it's a spot where you can genuinely feel the past resonating with you. Standing there, looking out across the bay with the tomb's stones at your back, it's as though time pauses for a brief moment.
The tomb itself is surrounded by a grassy area that invites a tranquil sit-down after exploring the site. The view of the bay, the grey Atlantic ocean, and the distant Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, is utterly breathtaking.
It was a self-guided visit - there are no guides on site or detailed information boards that I could see. This is the only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five. A little bit of interpretation would greatly enhance the visit for those not armed with prior knowledge about the Bronze Age and its burial practices. I recommend doing some research before you visit or hiring a local guide if possible.
The tomb itself is free to visit, open all year round, and doesn't get overly crowded, which I believe is a rare blessing in today's overtourist times.
So if you're a history aficionado or a lover of serene, picturesque views (or both, like me), do make it a point to visit the Altar Wedge Tomb. It's a delightful nod to our ancient past and a tranquil haven away from the bustling city life.
