A Very Atmospheric Experience
Clouds Hill的点评
点评：Not the easiest place to get to ( thank God for sat nav! ) Also easy to drive past - look for the little car park on the left and big house on the right - his neighbours) Positioned in lovely heathland at the top of the road. A Beautiful spot to live. The gorse is out as is the pink heather ( Late August,.) At the cottage look up the hill to the sky - this is where the name came from – ‘Clouds Hill.’
The guides are excellent. There's a little ‘check in’ hut that sells books etc. A little further is the cottage and a small garage where he kept his motor bike.
The cottage is very well maintained, quirky and small ( 2 up / 2 down) with very low ceilings but it is very atmospheric. Just down the road is the accident site, in fact, there are two of them - from the first in the RH corner of the car park, take the little track that runs back towards the cottage through the woods. and you'll find a more accurate one positioned below the road. He was killed less than a minute from home!
You can then go to his grave at Moreton village - take 3 lefts from Cloud Hill. It's in a 'additional' cemetery ( not at the church) , a minute's walk from the church. There's a cafe next door. His grave is at The back of the cemetery with his friends & neighbours. If you want to see his effigy / sculpture then go on to Wareham church. Everything is very close to hand.
So worth a visit.
This part of Dorset is just amazing. Both of Thomas Hardy's properties , Lawrence's history and 'Sculptures by the Lake' are all within 10 minutes of each other!
