点评:We completed two trips on the same day with Johnson at Madurai Inhabitants as we passed through this lively town. His English is excellent, as is his knowledge and interest in his home town.
The first trip was a tour of the main Sri Meenakshi temple, which was incredibly informative not only regarding the Hindu faith, symbolism and architecture but also the historical and cultural context. Johnson helped us understand the relationship between the people and their gods.
It was particularly interesting seeing the range of temples withing the huge complex. We were unlucky that the 12 year temple maintenance programmed was underway so the gopurams were under scaffold (which itself was an engineering feat, made from curved wood skillfully lashed together). However Johnson forwarded me some great photos of the exterior and interiors (taken before cameras were banned inside the temple). The works did not detract from the beauty and finesses of the architecture.
We then visited the banana market and walked through other markets, seeing a couple of incomplete historical sites and grabbing a coffee on the way to the Nayakar Palace. This immense building was very interesting, and again Johnson told the story so well. We also visited the Roman Catholic church, which was peaceful.
We then took a break for the afternoon and met Johnson for a separate visit in the evening to see the ceremony at the Sri Meenakshi temple where Shiva is carried, accompanied by music and incense, to join Meenakshi in her shrine for the night. The drumming resonated on the granite pillars and it was an honour to follow a path which has been trodden by the priests for hundreds of years. There was quite a bit of waiting, as the ceremony only takes place when the temple visitors have finished in the shrine, but it was well worth the wait.
Overall two excellent tours, thank you!
