点评:The Ridges Sanctuary is 1700 acres located in Bailey's Harbor, Wisconsin. My husband and I were seeking a morning trek, and happened to read a description of this place. We decided to check it out, and were very happy we did. An older gentleman named Don welcomed us warmly and handed us a map of the trails as we came through the door of the Center at 9 AM when it opened. After taking our $5 fees, he directed us down the side of the building onto the first trail. Its beginning is paved with wood, and a bit further on is decorated by a lovely covered footbridge. The trails get more rustic after this. Fair warning, tree roots run across most of them, which makes it imperative to step carefully. People with strollers find these roots almost impossible: the parents we saw encouraged their children to walk or carried them on their shoulders. Wheelchairs also won't work. Too, some of the paths are sandy, difficult to push anything through. But the sight and smell of the different trees, the sounds they make as the wind plays in them, and the overall feel of the place is peaceful and gorgeous. The trails are very well maintained and marked. One area features the famous Bailey Harbor Range Lights, an older system of a white and a red light used to guide ships through dangerous waters when properly aligned. Other areas of the Sanctuary are wetlands where water collects between dunes called swales, populated by frogs and dragonflies during warmer months. Wooden paths sometimes lead to viewing areas with benches along the swales. There are also owls, northern Wisconsin birds, otters, deer, squirrels, and many other wild creatures making their homes here. Discerning eyes may see their tracks along the trails, especially after a rain. My husband and I walked most of the trails, about 2 1/2 miles. If you like walking in a beautiful wooded setting , do not miss this Sanctuary: it is a rare and precious place.
