点评:So very, very sad. What a neglected mess. Most of the staff were very helpful but the “guide” was ill and the jolly gardener told us she was in the shower when we arrived at midday. The tourist value of the historical site is being wasted and the decay of the buildings, gardens, exhibits and signage is heart breaking. I enquired as to where the Robert Moffat bust was. “Oh, that was stolen last year”, she said.
It has survived transportation by sea and land, world wars and was centuries old and now……. all gone and probably melted down. It’s not too late to save this historic site and I hope the good work of the Forgotten Highway organisation is able to ensure that it is restored and preserved. The toilets were so dirty, smelly and disgusting I was unable to enter. You cannot offer a facility in this state to tourists. Dorothy’s ‘verkoek’ were good. The Grikwastad and Carnarvon museums were a delight and both worth a visit and they show that it CAN be accomplished for the benefit of everyone. The Tulbagh museum and their Church Street were also definitely worth visiting. We were warned so many times of how dangerous it was to visit the Eye of Kuruman, we did not go.
