My husband and I had a great time in Rwanda visiting the Golden Monkeys and Mountain Gorilla Trekking. We were assigned to visit the ISIMBI family. This was a ~2 hour drive + ~1 hour hike up through the jungle. Medium hike, wonderful views of the gorilla family. Our driver, Paul, was informative and educated us on Rwanda's history and had great conversations with us throughout our long drives. We would definitely recommend Rwanda if you're looking to do Gorilla Trekking! -1/2 star as the days start early and end early. We would be dropped off at the lodge no later than 3pm with not much to do. We ended up wasting the rest of the day sleeping as we had not adjusted to jetlag

We spent a total of 10 days in Tanzania. We started in Tarangire National Park followed by Lake Manyara, Karatu area (2 days) with 3 different tribal experiences (Maasai, Hadzabe and Datoga), Nudutu (2 days), Central Serengeti (2 days), Ngorogoro Crater (1 day), last day in Arusha.
Safari experience: 4.5/5 Dickson has a fantastic eye to spot animals. He can point out animals from miles away. We saw every animal we wished to see - big 5 and more. We were able to get close to many animals by staying quiet and letting them approach the vehicle. It was an amazing experience and would 100% recommend a safari in Tanzania. -1/2 star as we wished Dickson communicated to us better with regards to where we are headed, how long it'll take to drive there and how long we have to game drive. Minor thing compared to his ability to find and spot animals for us to view!

Unfortunately we experienced some dissatisfactions with the back end booking staff. Various events led us to having to rebook our own flight from Rwanda to Tanzania, costing us an additional USD$315 out of pocket. When we reached out to our agent to discuss compensation, we were passed over to their COO - Inge olde Rikkert. Instead of trying to understand the situation and how it led to us having to pay out of pocket for new flights, Inge deflected any responsibility and stopped responding to emails. This was quite upsetting as we had paid a great amount of money to have our trip planned the way we intended. With this in mind, we would suggest booking your own flights if booking through SOA. This way, you will have better control over changes and schedules.
Additionally, we would have appreciated transparency from SOA with regards to lodging. Some lodges we were put in are owned by Shadows of Africa - Olerai Lodge being one of them. We had a great stay here but we were not offered any other options in Arusha even though we asked our agent, Sonja, to provide us a "budget" and "luxury" prices to compare.
Overall, 4/5 experience with Shadows of Africa. Would neither recommend or advocate as there are so many tour operators in East Africa. Everyone's experience is different!
