A Spectacular Day with James Rogerson

点评：I accompanied my wife on a knitting themed holiday to the Shetlands. I had a few days off when the group was doing knitting workshops and booked a photography workshop with James Rogerson on one of them.
What an absolute joy! It proved to be the highlight of my trip. I'm a fairly experienced photographer, but not really a nature photographer. James is one of the preeminent nature photographers in the UK, but he was very accommodating and put together a very varied day with sea otters, spectacular landscapes, harbours and some delightful rusty cars and boats.
The sea otters were the stars of the day. James warned me that he couldn't always conjure up obliging otters to put on a show. Fortunately for me, he found a mother and pup swimming in a small bay and was able to position us on a shingle beach downwind of the otters just as they decided to come ashore. We watched and photographed them playing around on the beach 20 feet in front of us. Then, the otters went out into the bay and came back to shore with an octopus! We observed as the mother and pup squabbled over the poor octopus and consumed it tentacle by tentacle. What a spectacle of nature.
After that, we went to a nearby harbour. Again, James' timing was superb. A fishing boat came dashing into the harbour and docked right beside us. We were able to see its cargo of freshly caught crabs and had a very interesting conversation with the boat owner about the state of the industry and his catch.
I came back with some great shots of wildlife, landscape and Shetland life. More importantly, I came away with some great memories of my day with James, enriched with entertaining conversations about life and photography.
If you have interests in photography or nature, I can heartily recommend a day or more with Shetland guide James Rogerson and Shetland Nature.

之后，我们前往了附近的港口。詹姆斯把握时机的能力依旧出色——正好有一艘渔船疾驰着驶入港口，并在我们身旁停泊下来。我们得以看到船上装载的刚捕获的螃蟹，还与船主就渔业现状以及他的捕捞成果进行了非常有趣的交谈。
我带回了许多野生动物、风景以及设得兰群岛生活的精彩照片。更重要的是，与詹姆斯共度的这一天给我留下了美好的回忆，我们围绕生活和摄影展开了饶有趣味的对话。
