Hiking In the Sibillini Mountains

点评：The Sibillini National Park is such a beautiful area, extending over 70,000 hectares and including mountain ranges, valleys, lakes, hiking trails, medieval hill top towns, and unique features like the flower fields of Castelluccio di Norcia.
It is off the beaten track for most tourists but for those who have the time to explore the more remote countryside, this is a very beautiful part of Italy.
During our most recent stay in the Marche region, we had an incredible day, hiking in the Sibillini mountain range.
Starting at Montemonaco, we caught a small shuttle bus to the Rifugio Sibillini where we started our hike up to the peak of Monte Sibilla. This isn’t the tallest mountain in the range (although it stands at 2,173 metres so its no shrinking violet either), but it is steeped in legend of Sibilla, queen of a mythical, underground kingdom, and her fairies.
The scenery was breathtaking the entire way, with plunging valleys, green peaks, and beautiful wildflowers. Often, we stopped just to take it all in and to marvel in quiet appreciation at how stunning it all was. At times, we were surrounded by a beautiful stillness as we walked and at other times the silence would be broken by the tinkle of bells and we’d see a flock of sheep being shepherded across the distant slopes. It was a magical day.
Overall, a very special part of Italy.
