点评:Almost perfectly set between Rome and Naples, Gaeta is a lovely town on the sea, about 140 km from Rome.
Both from the seafront and from the hill you can admire a breathtaking view.
In addition, there is a lot of history behind it.
Already in Roman times it was considered a holiday destination.
Even now you can notice and admire the remains of Roman civilization.
In the Middle Ages it was protected by high walls and a castle was built in the area of the medieval village.
It slowly gained its independence and autonomy, and had its own currency.
It became a sort of maritime republic and took part in the battle against the Saracens.
Its position became increasingly strategic. Under the Angevins and the Swabians it lost its autonomy until it was regained under the Bourbon domination, in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
It was the last Bourbon bastion, when after a very long and exhausting battle in 1861 it had to surrender to the invaders.
During the fascist period it was incorporated into the Lazio region.
Of the many things to see, noteworthy are the cathedral dedicated to Saints Erasmus of Fornia and Marcian of Rome and to the Santissima Assunta, the sanctuary of the Santissima Annunziata, the Temple of St. Francis, the "Montagna Spaccata" and its sanctuary, the cave of the Turk and of course the Angevin-Aragonese castle. We also appreciated its cuisine largely based on seafood, and its very popular 'tiella".
Highly recommended.
