Belmore Park的点评
点评：I had no idea how captivated I would be by Goulburn in my short time here... it's a truly marvellous and beautiful city. After waking up I wanted to see the Courthouse before leaving town and this park was directly opposite from it.
Belmore Park was originally the market square from as early as 1843. All sorts of merchandise was exchanged here ... pigs, sheep, garden produce. It was also the location of many local sporting events like foot races, wheelbarrow races or a game called the greasy pig.
Lady Belmore planted a tree to commemorate the opening of the railway on the 27 May, 1869... the English Oak. In 1869 it was renamed Belmore Square after the patronage of Lady Belmore.
A picket fence went around the square in 1871. ( No longer there) The fence and gate with sandstone pillars was erected in 1902 to mark the coronation of King Edward VII.
The Rotunda was locally produced and it was built in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. The Hollis Memorial Fountain was built in memory of Dr.L.J.Hollis in 1899.
In 1899 Belmore Square was re-dedicated as Belmore Botanic Gardens.
The Boer War Memorial was erected in 1904. The granite column was erected in 1910 in memory of Mayor J.Knowlman. A large aviary existed here until 1926.
These items I have listed are not the only memorials. There is another memorial to World War 2 and various other conflicts. Also a small monument for Mayor Davies (1868). There is a glass house in the park.
With beautiful gardens, a playground, stunning trees, toilets and so much to look at... you should not miss strolling through this very beautiful park.
