点评:This is an excellent exhibition, very professionally displayed and with a good mix of artefacts and written material. Amongst the artefacts are items rarely in the public domain unless in a specialist museum: a ‘Strip Tease’ parachute suit and some of the smaller daggers easily concealed about the person for example as well as some of the gifts presented to people such as Vera Atkins and the Special Duties pilot Bob Large. The exhibition should appeal to people who are just beginning to take an interest in the SOE as well as those more knowledgeable but keen to develop their expertise further. It covers the differences between the Allied and Axis intelligence agencies, the nature and usual location of agents’ training and of course the stories of some of the agents. The museum has taken great care to make the contents of the exhibition accessible to children with a special ‘hub’ upstairs with displays more suitable for them. As it covers the location of the SOE training schools around the Guildford area it ought to be of particular interest to people living locally but deserves a much wider appeal. My husband and I travelled up from Tangmere (about an hour away) and considered this well worth the drive.
We parked in Castle carpark, walked down Castle Street stopping at the Krema café for delicious pastries and coffee before continuing down the road and around the corner to the museum. This visit brought us to the oldest part of Guildford, an area we were not familiar with but it is so charming that we vowed to return and explore another day. Indeed we may need to return to the museum as today’s visit did not do it justice. Before setting off for home we popped into the Kings’s Head practically next door for a swift coffee, thinking next time we’ll make time for lunch. All in all, the Guildford Museum is well worth a visit at any time but in order to see the SOE exhibition you need to be aware that the exhibition closes in April 2024.
