Great Day Trip from St. John’s
Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve的点评
点评：I was lucky enough to visit on a rare sunny October afternoon in Newfoundland. The scenic views on the hike out are indeed fabulous, although if you are coming from St. John’s you can get equally great views with a much shorter drive.
If you are visiting in the fall, as I was, you needn’t book far in advance. I booked a couple of days ahead, so was able to do the hike on a “better weather” day.
I’d say I have only a very casual interest in fossils. But, quoting the UNESCO website, this is a particularly important site, and that perhaps is the main reason I did the 2 hour drive from St. John’s:
“Of deep marine origin, these cliffs date to the Ediacaran Period (580-560 million years ago), representing the oldest known assemblages of large fossils anywhere. These fossils illustrate a watershed in the history of life on earth: the appearance of large, biologically complex organisms, after almost three billion years of micro-dominated evolution.”
I enjoyed the hike. The guides were great, and it was cool to walk on the fossils of things that were alive so long ago. There wasn’t quite the Wow factor that I expected I might have, but maybe that’s just me.
We actually stopped at the Colony of Avalon on the way to Mistaken Point and did a morning tour there ( highly recommended). We arrived for our Mistaken Point tour early, and were able to enjoy a picnic lunch at historic Cape Race lighthouse before driving back to the trailhead ( 10 minutes from the lighthouse) for our hike. When taken together, it was a very satisfying day trip for St. John’s, and well worth the drive time,
