点评:All rather strange! Our visit to Minterne gardens was on the penultimate day of their season ( 8th November ) and so we didn’t expect a lot horticulturally. Many trees had obviously dropped their leaves and the Rhodo’s ( with a couple of notable exceptions) weren’t in flower which was much as we’d expected. We went to see the “bones” of the garden, the landscape, the views, the water gardens etc and we intended to have a light lunch in their Terrace Cafe.
We arrived, parked in their car park opposite the church, and walked over to the gardens. There had been more than a dozen cars in the car park but when we arrived the place was deserted …… the cafe door was open but the food display had covers over and……there was no one around. No one to sell entry tickets, just an honesty box - but…. who carries cash to pay for garden entry? and it’s a partner garden of RHS , of which we are members, so our entry would have been free …. but there was no one to look at our cards!
The gardens were …… untended! It’s a woodland garden so an element of “wildness” is expected but we found no evidence of a gardeners recent work anywhere in the garden . The grass lawns were mown but, they aren’t in the woodland garden. I would have expected some pruning ( with saw and secateurs) …..nothing! No weeding around plants, no evidence of invasive weed control ( and there were lots ), some plants were labelled ( ✅) but the writing on many had washed off (❌), apart from a tree planted for the Kings Coronation (by Kate Adie 🫡) we saw no evidence of recent planting.
So ….. the website said the garden was open…..the cafe was open, …… the garden was the object of the visit …. But, although very attractive, and we enjoyed our stroll around the “Garden” we found absolutely no sign of life ….. apart from half a dozen other passengers in this Marie Celeste of a property.
