Great museum for copper and its history, housed in an old schoolhouse.
Arizona Copper Art Museum的点评
点评:If you're looking for a different museum, and to learn about the history of copper and it's deep ties to the state of Arizona, this is well worth visiting. Heck, I would say it's worth a day trip from Phoenix even. It is an old schoolhouse converted into a museum of copper and its alloys (bronze and brass), with really good displays and explanations on the history and use of copper through the centuries. This story is told by exhibiting all kinds of items--from old coins and artwork to copper panel ceilings to an overwhelming display of copper kitchenware. There is even one room filled with 'shell art'--artwork done on spent WWI bronze artillery casings. It's really fascinating, and at times visually overwhelming with all the exhibits. They also have a few plaques in the hallways discussing the history of the schoolhouse and the town of Clarkdale. If there is one criticism I'd make, it is that they could label more of the exhibits in the cases. There were some items I was left wondering what they were.
I'd say best to plan maybe an hour for a thorough visit. There were only a few other visitors when we were there, and I suspect that is usually the case as this is off the beaten path. Most tourists end up either in Jerome or the wineries of Cottonwood and skip this, which is a real shame. Admission I thought was fairly reasonable ($11 for adults) for the size of the place.
