Tanjung Puting is a National Park located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, and it's one of the best places to see orangutans in their natural habitat. The park is a mix of peat swamp forests, mangrove forests, and tropical rainforests, making it a haven for wildlife, including proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, and over 200 species of birds.
It is also the world's largest orangutan sanctuary, renowned for its orangutan conservation and unique biodiversity, offering wildlife-based nature tours in the tropical rainforest, including river cruises on the Sekonyer River in kelotok boats to see orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and various other wildlife at three main locations: Tanjung Harapan, Pondok Tanggui, and Camp Leakey, becoming an international ecotourism destination that relies on local community participation.
When you stay on a kapal klotok for few days, you'll get to cruise through the Sekonyer River and its tributaries, which flow through the heart of the park. The boat trip usually takes you to several feeding stations where orangutans are rehabilitated and released back into the wild. You'll get to see these magnificent creatures up close, and maybe even catch them swinging from tree to tree! I also saw a crocodile on the river!
The stay on the kapal klotok is usually for a few days, and it's a great way to immerse yourself in nature. The boat is equipped with basic amenities, and you'll get to enjoy the tranquility of the forest, the sounds of the wildlife, and the warmth of the local community.
