点评:In Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhism — as we noted also regarding the Ruwanwelisaya dagoba — a holy relic (whether an object used by the Buddha or even a part of his body) is far more than a mere memento; it is an entity that guarantees the Buddha’s actual, living presence.
This holds true for the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura as well. Because it originated from a cutting of the original Indian Bodhi tree — the tree at Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, beneath which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment around 528 BC — it's considered, quite simply, to be part of the Buddha’s own body.
Its importance is such that the tree is valued even more highly than the sacred physical remains (bone or ash fragments) left after the Buddha’s cremation — remains housed in the nearby Ruwanwelisaya dagoba, which make that structure the holiest site (or, more accurately, the second-holiest site) in Anuradhapura.
Consequently, the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura is — by all accounts — the most prestigious Buddhist relic in Sri Lanka, alongside the "Sacred Tooth" housed in the temple of the same name in Kandy.
The tree is estimated to be over 2,200 years old; the cutting from the Indian tree was reportedly brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC by Princess Sangamitta — sister of the Indian Emperor Ashoka — around the time Buddhism began to spread across the island.
Indeed, it doesn't exactly appear to be "bursting with health". One striking feature, for instance, is the long tree branch extending from the trunk just above the ground in a nearly horizontal position, and kept from collapsing only by numerous gilded metal supports holding it up.
Yet, as one might expect, none of this shakes the faith of the worshippers, who crowd the terraces built at various levels around the tree to pray.
However, when we visited the site, their numbers were relatively small compared to the gatherings that take place during "pujas" (ceremonies)
