The strong religious atmosphere envelops the entire city in a layer of ease and tranquility, while exuding a subtle artistic vibe everywhere. It’s hard to find another place that blends such harmony with everyday life so perfectly.
Early in the morning, I walked into Wat Chedi Luang. This temple was originally built in 1411 and once featured a pagoda nearly 98 meters tall, making it the highest structure in Chiang Mai. A major earthquake over six hundred years ago caused the spire to collapse, giving it its unique, incomplete appearance today. The precious Jade Buddha originally enshrined here has long been moved to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok. Perhaps precisely because it has lost its "national treasure" aura, when you step inside, you don’t feel any distance. It is like every ordinary person—not perfect, yet all the more authentic for it.
Leaving Wat Chedi Luang, I stumbled upon an unnamed temple. Its pagoda was actually woven from bamboo, set against ordinary residential houses. At that moment, it suddenly struck me that a sense of ritual is something we create ourselves. True reverence doesn’t necessarily require grand ceremonies or expensive investments. As long as one holds sincere faith in their heart, everything can be sacred; if the heart is empty, no amount of effort will hold meaning.
The golden, resplendent pagodas, deep-red temple halls, and the corrugated iron-roofed houses in the distance together form a landscape unique to Chiang Mai. Sometimes, travel isn’t just about checking off those grand, famous landmarks. What truly heals the soul and nourishes life are often the places that allow you to see the true essence of living.
I think Chiang Mai is exactly such a place.
