Discover Australia's little-known, fascinating WWII history
Cowra Prisoner of War Camp的点评
点评:It's quite a contrast: the errie peacefulness of this place as opposed to the noise & activity that must have been generated back during WWII when the camp was operational (especially during the breakout).
Building foundations only remain, however, the excellent audio from the look-out tower's loud-speakers upon arrival brings the place to life. Sign boards are also dotted along the walkways.
To enhance your visit, watch the 9-minute hologram at the Cowra Visitors' Centre's theatrette beforehand. It takes you through the events of the breakout, as told through the eyes of local girl, Claire, while visitors sit in a tin replica of a hut found at the POW camp. Very well done!
If visiting in late Sept / early October, the neighbouring canola fields will be ablaze with yellow. Also, nearby is the cemetery where the Japanese POWs are buried. And there is also a beautifully-painted water tank mural on your left soonafter you leave the camp for Cowra along Evans Street. (See attached photos).
Best to come when it's not too hot or raining, and keep in mind that facilities are limited to bathrooms only - so bring your waterbottle, hat & sunscreen. Plenty of parking and wheelchair-friendly.
All up, the Cowra POW Camp helps to raise awareness of the historical significance of Cowra.
