I am deeply shocked and appalled by the treatment my family received at the Accueil Voyageurs Handicapés in Strasbourg station. We went there to seek assistance for my cousin, who was traveling with her son—a child with a physical disability who cannot walk.
While my French husband stepped away for a moment, the office reopened. A male staff member (small stature) and a woman (curly hair) immediately ordered us to "get out," claiming it was "not a waiting room." They were incredibly rude and aggressive. Despite my attempts to explain that I was calling my husband back to translate and that we were there for disability assistance, they chased us out in a belittling and dehumanizing manner.
Key points of our experience:
1 Lack of Empathy: Even after my husband arrived to speak French, they continued to be rude and defensive.
2 Poor Observation: They claimed they "didn't see" the child had a disability, despite it being clearly visible.
3 Failure of Mission: The primary role of this office is to assist vulnerable travelers. Instead, they created a hostile environment for the very people they are paid to help.
Even if a disability is "invisible," staff in this specific department should be trained in patience and customer service. To be treated like a nuisance when seeking help for a disabled child is unacceptable.
SNCF needs to review the training and conduct of the staff working this shift. No family deserves to be treated with such disdain.
