点评:The museum was worth seeing because it appears to be the only one devoted to the history of the Acadians, their violent displacement, and their dispersal throughout the western hemisphere. In the mid-18th century, during what is known as the Great Derangement or Expulsion of Acadians, French inhabitants of Acadia were forcibly and sometimes violently deported from the region, which had come under the control of Great Britain. The Acadians dispersed to Europe and other sites in the Americas, notably Louisiana, where “Acadian” became “Cajun.”
This history is important, but the museum sticks fairly close to this central injustice without adding much contextualization or analysis. Do diasporic Acadians share a culture as well as a traumatic history? How is Acadian heritage/identity understood among different Acadian communities, including the well-known Cajun community? In what sense are Acadians an ethnicity (as the museum indicates)? Other than the general friendliness indicated, what were relations like between the Acadians and the Mi’kmaq (and could this be contextualized in relation to French vs British imperial attitudes and practices)? What made the Acadians focus on farming rather than fishing? What would it mean to consider the Great Derangement in relation to other British imperial displacements and cultural erasures?
Some of the physical exhibits were less engaging than they could have been with a little more thought about how to frame their significance.
The museum is housed in the farmstead of a former dairy, and there’s an interesting exhibit about the family who owned it in the context of Canadian/Quebecois/Acadian women’s history. The staff is extremely helpful.
