A superb and affordable museum experience - an eclectic mix of fascinating working equipment

点评：What a brilliant place - I came expecting a one to two hour visit, and left with an enormous grin five hours later! The exhibits are fascinating, very thoughtfully displayed to show original usage with context related details. Marvel at the quality of the engineering that allows this old equipment to continue to work well past its expected lifespan. The whole atmosphere, the noise, the smell and the rhythm of the working equipment is mesmerising.
I loved the eclectic mix of equipment on display - I strongly suspect reflecting the interests of the owners and staff involved. They are incredibly knowledgable, and very happy to explain more about the exhibits on show, so well worth engaging with them.
The diversity of the collection on show is great - for example the motorcycles include exotica like a water-cooled Scott two stroke and a Vincent, but also includes basic bikes like a BSA Bantam and a Honda C90!
The recreated ship’s radio room was fascinating, and was in use on shortwave using the museum’s amateur radio callsign - GB2MOP, reminding us of a time before satellite communications.
The working telephone exchange, complete with clicking uniselecters and historic handsets preserves a rapidly disappearing history for landlines, as the POTS (Plain old telephone service) service is about to come to an end.
The steam halls have mainly marine steam engines that have a very special atmosphere when working that defies description, but needs to be experienced for yourself. Just be aware that the steam engines on show are NOT steam railway locomotives!
It is important to check the website to find out when the museum is open when planning a visit - it is usually only open at weekends unless they have an event on.
