Avoid the nasty volunteer called Simon who readies the church on Saturday afternoons

点评：My solo visit to this beautiful country church 3.15 pm Saturday 18th May should have been a peaceful and a pleasant experience. Alas it was not, there I was a single elderly person who came in as one does to look around for a brief quiet respectful visit, to marvel at the stained glass and architecture and make a small donation , pick up a guide leaflet to read the history . My son and daughter in law who live relatively locally held my dog outside. Nothing out of the ordinary that could upset an unassuming communicant Anglican lady from Wales? No? You'd be wrong. I met the local volunteer jobsworth!
I had quietly entered when this rough man complete with tool box and extension cables arrived. He boomed out rudely and gruffly to me ' Church is closing'. Well he wasn't locking up, he was doing jobs and I was not in his way. I said I'd come a long way and I just wanted to look around please. His hackles were up 'Ive got jobs to do, Ive got to get ready for tomorrow' Well, I was not pleased with the tone or the attitude. My retort was ' So Gods house is only open on Sunday, he only works on Sunday does he and people are not welcome into His house on Saturday afternoon, you are telling me I am not welcome in His empty house at 3.30pm on a Saturday afternoon because you say so, although you are in it.' I ask this person who he was, he wouldn't tell me. There was no rhyme nor reason for this rude unwelcoming display to visitors, particularly when so many country churches are losing their flock Apparently, my enquiries revealed that its not the first time people have encountered rudeness from this volunteer. Im told his name is Simon. So I have sad memories that could have spoilt my afternoon, but redeemed by a wonderful visit to the very welcoming hostelry and the Post Office.
