点评:This was our second visit to this hill top oddity; being a small 18th-century round house and a temple, set within nine acres of “pleasure grounds”. Paths though the pleasure grounds start here: heading-off eastwards through dense woodland along uneven rocky, root-strewn and muddy tracks. There is little to see in the way of views as the surrounding landscape is totally obscured by trees. The air here, even after the fall of leaves, felt full of oxygen.
I daresay that if you were to press-on past the initial half mile of paths (that we walked) you would be able to see some fabulous views. The ‘going’ was hard and we were unsure about having the time or energy to walk-on to prove my hypothesis. So, we ducked-out, retracing our steps back to the round house.
What we did see here from the circular path around the round house, was however, very rewarding. There is a viewing platform giving landscape views of the River Wye as it encircles the western side of Monmouth. It was a misty start to the morning as we had set-off from our hotel, but we could see that this was just river-valley-mist.
Mid autumn nights get longer, and temperatures get cooler. The warm River Wye had exchanged some moisture with the cooler air above it. The mist generated was spectacular when viewed from the Kymin as it filled the Wye Valley below. The adjacent hilltops remained clear and sunny, and the high points appeared as if they were islands in a sea of white mist. Wonderful!
Bolstered by the beautiful views, we returned to our car in the NT carpark, via another, possibly final, look at the Naval Temple, and set-off for Ross-on-Wye.
