点评:There's online an old photo on the church of San Pietro in Albe, taken during the restoration begun in 1955.
As is known, this restoration began after the church, destroyed by the 1915 earthquake, had been abandoned for decades. The photo essentially depicts a field of ruins: we know that virtually only the compact perimeter walls of the "cella" of the pre-existing Temple of Apollo (3rd century BC) remained standing, on which the church had been built in the 12th century without substantial alterations. These walls, however, are not visible in the photo, while the columns — also of Roman origin — of the nave are clearly visible, lying on the ground, the subject of the restorers' work.
The restoration was therefore long and painstaking, but expertly executed. The website (in Italian), called "semisottolapietra", provides some essential information: the columns were hollowed out, the internal stone was replaced with iron reinforcements, which were anchored to the floor on one side and to the ceiling, the bell tower, and the apse on the other, forming a compact, earthquake-proof cage.
As for the splendid iconostasis and ambo (early 13th century), showing fabulous mosaic decorations and polychrome marble inlays, from the Roman Cosmati school: they had been severely damaged by the collapse of the vault and were carefully restored by the renowned "Opificio delle pietre dure" (Workshop of semiprecious stones) in Florence.
Art critic Cesare Brandi was able to write about this entire operation that it was "the best restoration ever carried out in Italy since the postwar period".
Thus, we can now enjoy a remarkable architectural and sculptural work, one of the most precious in Abruzzo.
