点评:A true hidden gem! This place has to be experienced— photos just can't do it justice. For me, the real stars of the Steens were the wildflowers: amazing in their abundance and diversity, thanks to the unique geography of the mountains. Here you can see water-loving plants like Shooting Stars, Bog Orchids, and Elephant Ears just feet away from desert-loving sagebrush. (Seems we hit the peak bloom just right, so plan your trip for July.) The views from the various vistas were also jaw-dropping: short walks from the parking areas suddenly reveal immense glacier-carved valleys and steep drop-offs. A well-maintained gravel road takes you on a scenic loop. I would advise starting from Frenchglen (the Southern half of the loop is drier), and camping at either Fish Lake, Jackman, or near Lily Lake (if you want dispersed/primitive camp sites).
While you're there, plan to take a few hours to drive through part of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (again, starting from Frenchglen) for some excellent birding. If you need a cold one or a tasty sandwich, the Frenchglen Hotel can help you out; the Frenchglen Mercantile will have whatever else you need.
