PalmerSport的点评
点评：I want to start by saying that there are some incredibly nice people working at PalmerSport, and up until one particular incident, today was on track to be a genuinely amazing experience.
I’ve recently run into some serious health complications which are going to have lifelong consequences, and this has had a pretty devastating effect on my mental health. I’ve become extremely withdrawn, struggle to get out of bed some days and have made some fairly terrible life choices along the way.
Today was actually one of the first things in a long time that I had properly looked forward to.
Unfortunately, I made the apparently catastrophic decision to wear a T-shirt which I’ll happily admit was at the absolute far end of dark humour. It was offensive — that was quite literally the joke. I completely understand somebody finding it distasteful. Had a member of staff simply taken me aside and said, “Mate, we can’t have you wearing that here, could you change or cover it up?”, I would have done so without argument.
Instead, I found myself surrounded by several members of the team who aggressively berated me and spoke to me in a way that made me feel like some sort of horrible human being. It was humiliating and wildly disproportionate to the situation.
The timing was particularly brilliant because seconds later I was expected to climb into a seriously fast race car and concentrate on driving it around a track.
I was then made to wear an old racing suit that absolutely stank. So after being made to feel like some sort of social deviant over a T-shirt, I was effectively paraded around dressed like a recently processed inmate before being strapped into a race car.
Unsurprisingly, I wasn’t exactly in the ideal headspace. While driving, I became extremely upset and asked to return to the pits. I was so embarrassed by the situation that rather than staying for lunch or completing the rest of a day I’d genuinely been excited about, I got into my own car and went home.
I didn’t demand a refund, cause an argument or make a scene. I simply left. I think being willing to walk away from the majority of an expensive experience says enough about how uncomfortable and upset I felt.
What makes this such a shame is that several members of the team were absolutely fantastic. The facilities and cars are incredible and, without this incident, I suspect I would be writing a five-star review.
If my T-shirt wasn’t acceptable, fine. Tell me. Ask me to change it. I’m an adult and would have done so without argument. What you don’t need to do is surround someone, aggressively lecture them and humiliate them immediately before putting them behind the wheel of a high-performance race car.
I’m not writing this to discourage anyone from visiting PalmerSport. Most of the people I met were brilliant and I completely understand why the place is so highly regarded. I genuinely hope management looks at what happened and considers whether it could have been handled with a little more discretion and basic human decency.
You never really know what somebody is going through. Had somebody simply taken me aside and politely asked me to change my T-shirt, this review wouldn’t exist and I would probably be writing about what an incredible day I’d had instead.
