A fantastic hike through tropical forest with an option for a swim beneath a waterfall

点评：We had a fantastic day hiking through the magnificent tropical forest to the top of El Yunque, then after coming down most of the way, we bifurcated onto another trail for a dip in the pool at the base of the beautiful waterfall. Doing both in a day makes for a full day’s hike. On the way out we stopped about 2/3 of the way up El Yunque at a kind of forest cabin with a fantastic view to fill up on a whole range of delicious fresh fruit and drink coconut water. The views from the top were fantastic but much more than that were the fascinating insights into the flora, fauna, and history of the region by Alexey who is a really outstanding guide (alexey79.rame@nauta.cu, +(53)54187264 on whatsapp)). El Yunque is about an hour’s drive from Baracoa. Alexey organises the driver and car (we had a somewhat battered classic from 1957 if I remember rightly) to pick you up at your casa in Baracoa all at very competitive rates. I did three hikes with him and could see that he always does his utmost to be helpful and give you the best possible experience but knows when to let you . I saw some people trying to hike El Yunque in beach shoes but they made really slow progress and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it because of patches of mud and rocks – better to wear at least trainers. If you do the hike it would probably be best to try to do it on a dry day. Rainfall probably impacts less the other trips in the magnificent Baracoa area (the Humboldt Park, El Yumuri, Rio Duaba, Rio Miel) simply because of the steepness of the slope on El Yunque. A memorable experience.
