点评:We went to Kakamega forest in late December, stayed at KWS Udo's Campsite (needs to be booked through E-Citizen) and decided to explore both parts - southern and northern in 2 days.
In the northern part, you need to come to the Kakamega Forest Station where you will meet a ranger and a tour guide who can take you through the forest. There are different walk options with different prices, and for us the difference between some of them was very blurry. For example, we opted for the long walk (3-4 hrs) but in the end it was just nearly 2 hrs so we paid less than expected (1600 KES for two people). We did not do the viewpoint as we were a bit exhausted after a long train journey, and also to get to the viewpoint, you had to take a motorcycle which was inconvenient to us. Nethertheless, the walk was nice with the guide called Abraham - he told us a lot about different types of trees and animals.
If you are very hungry and tired after the hike, there is a Rondo Retreat Centre in 2,5 km from the forest station - you may need to call and book in advance, especially during high festive season. They offered lunch at 1700 KES per person which included salad, chicken pie, dessert and tea/coffee.
From the Kakamega Forest Station to the KWS Kakamega National Reserve, it's approx. 30 km by road. You can take a guide at the gate, and there are also different walk options. This forest part seems to be better maintained and the trails are marked. We did a 4-hour walk which included primary and secondary forest, waterfall, viewpoint and the village - we paid 3,000 KES for 2 people. We had a very nice guide called Dennis.
The forest is indeed unique, but we did not see many animals - just some monkeys high in the trees and of course birds, but no reptiles or any other mammals. Perhaps one needs to spend some more days to explore it fully.
Please note the network is very poor near Kakamega Forest Station and also at Udo's Campsite so do have enough cash to pay the guides and for other expenses.
