A month later, on 10 July, I called again while back in Cape Town. The same staff member acknowledged having spoken to me before but suddenly claimed she no longer remembered the scarf being found. She said that after a week, any lost items are moved to the control room. When I went to the control room, the manager there was very friendly and helpful, but unfortunately, the scarf was never handed in.
If phone calls at Spier are recorded, they will clearly hear the staff member confirming twice that the scarf was found. It's deeply disappointing to see a lack of accountability. The scarf didn’t vanish, it was mishandled after being found.
I advise anyone visiting: do not leave any personal belongings behind at Spier Wine Tasting. Sadly, it’s not other customers you need to be concerned about, it’s the staff entrusted with lost items.
