点评:For a small fee of R20 per vehicle, I recommend parking inside the reserve passed the boom gates. Entry fee was R30 pp.
The staff were friendly but at reception the lady did not know much about the various hiking options. The start of the hike was not well marked at all and this needs to be addressed.
We figured out that the hikes seem to have a common starting point behind reception, and eventually found our way to the Protea hike which seems to be the most popular of all the options.
It’s a moderate difficulty 3.1km gradual climb to the halfway point and about 3.4km easy downhill loop back to the car park. Lovely vistas of Strand and Gordon’s bay with the majestic Hottenton Hollands mountains as a backdrop.
There are benches to stop at and enjoy the view. Take enough water, a cap and comfortable walking shoes with grip as the path is quite slippery in places.
It seems there was a fire a few months ago but I think in the next few months the proteas will be in full bloom with a bit of rain. Download the map on your phone from the website or purchase one for R5 at the start.
Highly recommend if you’re in the Somerset west area. Please note, there is a bit of noise from the renovations at the start which may disturb you picnic.
