A must visit when in Franschhoek, Huguenot history
Huguenot Memorial Museum的点评
点评:This is a wonderful Museum to visit in Franschhoek.
It is actually four for the price of one.
The first part nearest the town is the admissions and entrance to the local history section. This comprises of the history of the Huguenots who settled in what was then known as the Oliphants Hoek or valley later to be renamed Franschhoek after the French who settled here. This museum is packed to the rafters of their history, of individual families how they settled here and the skills they brought with them. From farming and wine making to building and transport they shaped what is now one of the must visited places in South Africa.
How they integrated and became leading citizens in the formation on the country, family histories go hand in hand with its development.
There are also plenty of interesting artifacts housed in the museum, donated by many of these families.
On the other side of the street is the section dedicated to the story of the Huguenots their persecution in Europe and how they left and travelled to all corners of the globe, with some not living to see their new world. along with their stories are again artifacts and their skills. The building that houses the museum was originally in Cape Town and was relocated to Franschhoek and reconstructed. to house this Memorial to the Huguenots. From this section it is a short walk through well laid out gardens to the Huguenot Memorial, which stands proud against the backdrop of the mountains that surround the valley.
The fourth section is the quaint little First Perfume Museum to the left as you enter from the gate. This houses a very unique history of perfume and should not be missed.
Plenty to see here and well worth spending a few hours, we almost spent the whole morning as there was so much to see and history to digest.
