Rome’s Secret Ski Resort!

点评：To be honest, the ski resort isn’t actually in Rome… however it is a mere 2 hours 30 mins drive from Rome and only 2 hours from Naples! I learned to ski here as a young man in my twenties, and twenty years later both of my kids have learned to ski here too thanks to the wonderful instructors at the ‘Scuola Italiana Freeski Roccaraso’, some of whom also speak English if you ask. This really is a brilliant family friendly resort, which we keep on returning to year after year with an ever-expanding group of friends (16 of us in 2023!), and there’s very good reasons for that. Yes, the Alps and the Dolomites are much bigger and arguably more beautiful, but the Alto Sangro Ski Resort has many other advantages. Firstly, you can fly directly to Rome, which means you can top and tail your trip with a visit to the world’s most beautiful and captivating city. Secondly, the Romans and Neapolitans tend to use the resort only at the weekends, as they normally head to the Dolomites or Alps if they were taking a weeklong vacation. This means that you and your family could pretty much have the resort to yourselves Monday to Thursday with no queuing at most of the ski lifts. Thirdly, there’s the cost. Flights to Rome are relatively inexpensive and rental cars during the winter months are reasonable too. We paid around £1000 for return flights with BA for a family of 4 from London to Rome in February 2023 during school holidays. Yet you could fly even cheaper. Checking out prices for February 2024 suggests you could even find flights for around £600 for a family of 4 if flying with some of the cheaper airlines. Car hire for the week from Fiumicino Airport was a mere £142 for a large estate car and accommodation in Rome during the winter is as cheap as it’ll ever be (Double rooms @ £100 per night). Accommodation at the ski resort is also plentiful, but we’d recommended staying in one of the nearby beautiful chocolate box villages such as Pescocostanzo or Rivisondoli (Family room - €160 per night) to really enjoy your stay, although this does mean a 15 mins drive to the resort and back every day. A ski pass for the Alto Sangro area, which covers 90km of runs and 24 lifts, cost £724 for a family of 4 for 4 days as we tend not to ski on the Fridays when the crowds from Rome and Naples start to arrive. Finally, and arguably the most important advantage of skiing in the heart of Italy, is the food! There’s none of the overpriced poor-quality hybrid of German/French/Swiss/Italian/Austrian cuisine you tend to get in the north. Here in Abruzzo, it’s fantastic Italian cuisine at its absolute best. Downsides? Well not too many I can think of, which is why we keep on returning year on year. Arguably as it’s further south than the major European ski resorts, there’s always the chance of little snow. But over the 25 years I’ve been going to Alto Sangro, I can only remember a couple of times when there was a limited amount of snow, and I’m pretty sure there were also similar issues in the Alps and the Dolomites.
