点评:Using the words of the Frenchman standing next to me as I gawped at the ceiling... Somehow C'est magnifique' has more emotion to it than English.
Esna is a bit off the standard route map from Luxor, even though Nile cruises stop at Esna it is usually only to go through the lock gates, and I can understand why it is a bit off the beaten track, it is only a small site and a whole boatload of tourists would overwhelm it! The site is about 1.5 hours from Luxor by road, passing through farming landscapes and traditional villages on the way, market day in one of them made my journey a little longer than usual.
Small, but beautifully marked is an expression to use here, there are many feature to look out for in this Roman period temple.
Some interesting ancient inscriptions on the walls including one that asks that visitors should not have had sex for several days before entering the temple, and more usually, an exhortation to wash our hands before entering!
After buying a ticket you cross the road and access to the site is via a ''shopping arcade'', how unusual is that for a site in Egypt!! Not!! Mainly run of the mill stuff on sale if you really want it, but I did spot some slightly unusual ceramics and art in a couple of the shops.
Just a taster in the way of photos, I don't want to give too much away..
Something to look out for is the 'zodiac ceiling'!!
The carvings throughout are some of the finest that I have seen anywhere in Egypt
Access to the temple is by steps, 45 of them in fact.... There are lifts/elevators but they seem to be recently installed and not working.
There are also a couple of buildings nearby that are worthy of a photograph.
Avoid the cafe just outside the arcade entrance, a few metres to the north of the arcade. It is tourist trap that want 5 US$ for a cup of tea and use of the toilet such as it is. I got my driver to pay for mine but it still cost me US$2 which is a lot more than the average 50 cents!!
